UMMC places among MBJ’s healthiest workplaces

UMMC captured third place in the Mississippi Business Journal’s 2017 Mississippi Healthiest Workplaces Awards.

The Medical Center advanced in the competition after being named a finalist in 2016.

The award recognizes the top employers across Mississippi who show excellence in providing employer health and wellness programs and healthy workplace environments. Employers who practice evidence-based comprehensive health management programs improve their culture, engagement and value.

The program is a collaboration of the Mississippi Business Group on Health, the MBJ, the Mississippi Department of Health and the Mississippi Association of Self-Insurers.

Safe Kids Mississippi earns community outreach kudo 

Safe Kids Worldwide recently honored Safe Kids Mississippi with an Excellence in Community Outreach Award at the parent organization’s International Childhood Injury Prevention Convention.

More than 500 safety professionals from more than 30 countries around the world attended the event to collaborate on efforts to enhance the safety of children on the road, at home and at play.

Safe Kids Mississippi was selected from more than 400 community organizations across the U.S. and 30 countries around the world. The award is given every other year to recognize excellence in protecting children.

“Safe Kids Mississippi is an inspiration to our entire network as we work to reach more families, prevent more injuries and save more lives,” said Torine Creppy, acting president and chief programs officer for Safe Kids Worldwide.

“We’re thankful to have Children’s of Mississippi, a lead agency whose mission is in line with Safe Kids Worldwide and our passion for injury prevention,” said Elizabeth Foster, project manager of the Safety and Community Outreach program. “No idea presented to Children’s is too big or too small. The supportive administration, employee and student volunteers enable this program to reach all corners of the state.”

UMMC among nation’s ‘most wired’ in health care

The Medical Center has been named to the 2017 “Most Wired” list for health care facilities by Hospitals & Health Networks.

In partnership with the American Hospital Association, Hospitals & Health Networks conducts the survey each year to recognize organizations for excellence in IT services and technology deployment in patient care. It’s the fifth consecutive year that UMMC has been included on the list.

According to the publication’s website, this year’s Most Wired list “includes hospitals and health systems that rely on increased clinical capabilities, telehealth and mobile technology.”

“In addition to the Most Wired roundup, there are lists of hospitals that are considered advanced, most improved, innovative and small/rural.

“The results show that many hospitals and health systems have shifted their focus from acquisition of technology to integrating tech into strategies to improve population health, capitalize on data analytics, boost patient engagement and introduce new efficiencies.”

Mississippi MED-COM garners best practices distinction

UMMC’s Mississippi MED-COM has been lauded with a national award from the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems.

Mississippi MED-COM was named overall transport with the best practice for communication competencies by the commission, an organization of nonprofits dedicated to improving the quality of patient care and safety of the transport environment for services providing rotor wing, fixed wing and ground transport systems.

MED-COM is the only emergency communications center in the state's medical air transport system honored in the commission’s 2017 Best Practices Program.

The commission recognized many of AirCare’s operations. Chief among them is training for MED-COM’s communications specialists who dispatch and track medical helicopters and ambulances for UMMC, conduct transfers from one hospital emergency room to another, facilitate medical control calls for paramedics statewide, and coordinate medical logistics for patients during small disasters or major hurricanes impacting the entire state.
